What the Research Says on CBD and Inflammation

CBD (cannabidiol) and inflammation are two inseparable terms.

Almost every research or product ad of CBD always has this connection to inflammation. With that said, its not surprising to find that in a 2020 survey by the SingleCare team, 64% of CBD users in the U.S., use CBD for pain relief and inflammation

In this article, we collated some of the most important research on CBD and inflammation pulled from independent business and scientific bodies. But first, let’s define inflammation.

Inflammation 101

Most people will have encountered inflammation at some point in their life for various reasons.

Some may have their cheek balloon as a wisdom tooth erupts, or an ankle swell after a bad fall, maybe even a wound that becomes volcano-like as it becomes infected and releases pus. But in all of these icky situations, inflammation is a natural body immune response to an injury, infection, or irritant.

Many actions happen in the inflammation process;

A. Cells in the area can release hormones to activate body responses, such as widening blood vessels to allow more blood to reach the affected area.

B. As more blood reaches the site, immune system cells can travel to the affected area to help with the healing process.

C. But all of these actions can cause swelling as more fluid is brought into the area, and the increased blood flow can cause redness and a hot feeling.

D. Likewise, the various hormones released can irritate nerves which leads to the pain felt during inflammation.

What does the research say on CBD for inflammation and pain?

After understanding a smidge of the basics of inflammation, the question remains: “Is CBD oil good for joint pain and inflammation?” Believe it or not, long before cannabis became legal in the U.S., scientists have already begun exploring the potential benefits of CBD for pain and inflammation.

  1. A study from 2008 began exploring the uses of cannabinoids, which includes CBD, on pain from sources such as arthritis and cancer. The study concluded that CBD could help ease pain and showed promise as an adjunct to preexisting pain treatments.
  2. Another study from 2010 looked into CBD anti-inflammatory properties and discovered that CBD could suppress the body’s inflammatory response. Moreover, the study describes that it can help ease the symptoms.
  3. 2015 saw a study that compared CBD to the analogs, or natural counterparts in the body, that fought against inflammation. The study concluded that CBD had possible therapeutic applications due to its anti-inflammatory actions in various preclinical models such as colitis, collagen-induced, arthritis, encephalomyelitis, and more.
  4. In 2016, a study compared CBD for pain and inflammation versus nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin. The study describes that CBD is one of several cannabinoids that can be used for inflammation thanks, in part, to being generally free from adverse effects that common pain medicines have.
  5. In practical use, recently, in 2020, a study reviewed CBD as an anti-inflammatory agent and its analgesic and neuroprotective effects for sports performance. Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD), a common problem leading to loss of muscle function, soreness, and injury among athletes, was found to be a possible application for CBD. The study describes that EIMD could be tackled as CBD modulates the inflammatory processes; by stimulating anti-inflammatory hormones and inhibiting pro-inflammatory ones.

What does the research say on CBD dosage for pain and inflammation?

Knowing how much CBD oil for inflammation to use can be tricky. However, this isn’t to say that it can’t be determined as even common medicines today need some form of adjustment. In a broader sense, studies do tackle how much CBD to use and, with the dosage, does CBD cure inflammation.

A study described CBD tended to have better effects at higher doses compared to lower doses. Despite this, the study also states that CBD has a wide range of dosing that can still elicit its effects from as little as 1mg/kg to as much as 50mg/kg.

Although not related to pain and inflammation, another study explored CBD’s use to help with sleep and anxiety. The research described that, aside from helping with sleep and anxiety, CBD was well-tolerated among the patients, with few reporting any side effects. The doses used in the study ranged from 25mg to 175mg per dose.

Again, another study reviewed various other studies regarding the dosage used and how long take CBD works for inflammation and anxiety, alongside other diseases. Despite the considerable variation in dosing, the study found that CBD administration was well-tolerated – with evidence that a single dose could help with social anxiety disorder.
