With the advent of Cannabidiol and its subsequent popularity generating a rapidly growing market, innovations to CBD products have been popping up frequently. However, some innovations can be hit or miss as it lands in the realm of pseudoscience. 

But is CBD nanotechnology one of these scientific mumbo-jumbo slapped onto product labels to make it seem futuristic, just like in the movies? Apparently not, and how it works may be a game-changer to increase CBD absorption in the bloodstream and bioavailability.

What is Nano CBD?

CBD nanotechnology, simply put, is the application of nanotechnology to cannabidiol. In essence, nanotechnology is a science that deals with the application “of extremely small things”. 

These applications are conducted on a scale of 1 to 100 nanometers or 0.000000001 to 0.000000100 meters. To put this into perspective, a single human hair is 50,000 to 100,000 nanometers wide.

Nanotechnology is commonly used in medicine and pharmacology but is now beginning to shape Nano CBD technology. Sometimes companies can refer to Nano CBD as “water-soluble CBD”; however, that term can be misleading. 

CBD is not water-soluble, but this is where CBD nanotechnology application takes place to make it appear water-soluble on a macroscopic scale.

Nano CBD vs Regular CBD

By the very nature of the compound, CBD is a hydrophobic molecule which simply means it will not mix with water. But, on the other hand, CBD is also a lipophilic molecule that allows it to combine or dissolve in lipids and fats – components that make up the human cell wall.

The hydrophobic nature of CBD becomes an issue when you realize that the mouth and digestive tract is, essentially, watery. This is one of the primary causes why CBD delivered orally tends to stay in oily droplets that contain CBD molecules until fully digested.

Compounding this with the “first-pass effect”, a metabolism pathway from the gut to the liver, CBD molecules will be broken down or filtered out before finally entering the bloodstream. This will limit the overall bioavailability of regular CBD.

As for comparing Nano CBD vs CBD, products utilizing Nano CBD benefits by decreasing oil droplet size, which increases surface contact with the body’s enzymes and absorptive tissue.

What are the Nano CBD Benefits?

Nano CBD utilizes a drug delivery system called NLC or nanostructured lipid carriers. The NLC is composed of “physiological, biodegradable, and biocompatible lipid materials”. Encapsulating a drug with NLC helps overcome complications from absorption while increasing bioavailability and decreases degradation.

What this means for consumers is that Nano CBD is potentially capable of decreasing the time it takes for oral CBD to be absorbed. At the same time, it increases the bioavailability of CBD in the bloodstream. This means that lesser concentrations of CBD are needed in every dose to get the same level of effect.

In a Weedmaps interview with Dr. Mary Clifton, she says she remains undecided about nanotechnology in general but her patients show enthusiasm on the CBD/nanotechnology formulation. “A number of my patients swear by the use of nanotechnology to make their CBD more effective.”

Dr. Pratap Singh from the University of British Columbia, said that nano CBD, particularly nano-encapsulation “should require more clinical trials,” and “more rigorous testing if the size is below 50 or 20 nanometers.” This is because nanoparticles easily enters cells. In the long run, they might get stored unnecessarily on human organs leading to inflammation and other unwanted effects.

Nano Enhanced CBD Oil

Many will be more familiar with CBD oil that comes in bottles with droppers or tinctures. However, new CBD oil products are popping up with brands describing them as “Nano Enhanced.”

What does Nano Enhanced mean? Nano enhanced CBD oil benefits, basically, from the aforementioned improvements that nanotechnology brings. Instead of your run-of-the-mill CBD oil, Nano Enhanced CBD oil utilizes the NLC method of encapsulating their CBD extract.

Is the method even viable when it comes to this kind of product? Well, an experimental study from 2018 compared bioavailability of market-ready Sativex versus a CBD/THC nanoemulsion formulation on healthy male volunteers. The study resulted in the nanoemulsion formulation having relatively faster absorption and improved bioavailability.

How to Make Nano CBD Oil

Traditional CBD oil is made by extracting CBD concentrate from a hemp plant. The concentrate then is mixed with other oils, bases, and other ingredients according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Nano CBD oil goes one step further in its process by using typical nanostructured lipid carriers or NLC, as mentioned earlier, to coat the CBD molecules in their oil. In addition, the method creates microemulsions or smaller droplets once consumed to generally improve absorption and increase bioavailability.

This can be beneficial to those who want faster CBD effects to manifest while potentially lowering dosage but not using other potentially harmful yet faster consumption methods such as smoking or vaping.

There are still massive ways to improve upon Nano CBD, with research still creating more solid conclusions and contributions. But in the end, it just means that consumers will be able to get more out of less – which can lead to potential savings. Just make sure to look for Nano CBD products from reputable companies and avoid products that just ride the hype.
