A lot of customers frequently write in to ask us so what exactly does CBD do for my body? They’ve heard others stories of how it helped with pain, insomnia, and anxiety. How can a compound be responsible for this? Simply put, homeostasis.
Homeostasis refers to stability, balance, or equilibrium within a cell or the body. It is an organism’s ability to keep a constant internal environment. So what happens when you have anxiety? Your body’s equilibrium is off. What happens when you are stressed out and you can’t sleep? Again, your body is out of kilter. Homeostasis is not often talked about but it is critically important to a healthy body and life.
If life was easy we’d all have perfect homeostasis and would be in a constant state of calm. However, we know that is not the case. There are a host of factors that can negatively affect one’s homeostasis:
Toxins in the environment that we experience can have a negative effect on homeostasis. Air pollution such as smog and wildfire debris can impact the body at the cellular level, causing an imbalance. The same is true for herbicides and pesticides. Even the sun can damage individual cells.
You are not going to believe this, but the way you live your life has an impact on your internal body. Crazy, right? But seriously, eating fatty foods and sweets consistently breaks down cells in your body – good cells. Not having a balanced diet of healthy foods and moderate caloric intake leads to cellular dysfunction. Also, those that are more active and more consistent blood pressure, blood sugar, and healthier oxygen levels. Finally, being surrounded by stressful situations can trigger an internal imbalance.
Thanks, Dad! We all know that your DNA comes from your parents and their family lines. If either parent has been predispositioned to genentic DNA mutations that lead to a deficiency or illness it is likely these genes will be passed down to their children. So some people are already starting behind the 8-ball. For these individuals it is crucial that their environment and personal lifestyle are both healthy to offset this genetic deficiency.
Clearly, there are many things that can affect one’s internal equilibrium. So how does CBD help?
How does CBD help with Homeostasis?
The endocannabinoid system (ECS) works to maintain homeostasis throughout your body. Think of the ECS as a global command center that is constantly looking over your body looking for deficiencies caused by stress, pain, anxiety, and more. When a deficiency is detected, cannabinoids (CBD, CBG, etc.) are synthesized to interact with receptors. A chemical response is created to remedy the deficiency. Think of it as a ledger — you want to keep your body at a 0. When it goes negative, your ECS works to bring back to level. All humans have cannabinoid receptors and naturally occurring cannabinoids throughout their body.
So why do I need CBD if I have cannabinoids naturally occurring in my body already?
Just like you can have an iron deficiency, you can have a cannabinoid deficiency. Maybe your body doesn’t create enough cannabinoids to bond to the receptors. Or maybe you have slacked off and have started eating poorly and not exercising. Whatever the reason, your body is out of sync and this is what can you lead you to feeling sluggish or stressed or anxious. Think of a Buddhist Monk and his pursuit of mindfulness and calm. Most likely, his ECS is in great shape and hardly has to react as internally things are constantly calm. Now think of a coal miner who is overweight and working in hazardous conditions. Most likely, this individual wreaks havoc internally and will have a cannabinoid deficiency. These examples are both the extreme end of the spectrum, but most individuals fall in the middle.
At some point in their life, most individuals are going to have a deficiency in their ECS. I don’t know of a person I’ve encountered that has never been stressed, anxious, sick, or in pain at some point. CBD products help give that extra boost to the ECS that is in need. So when you put that tincture dropper under your tongue and that oil absorbs into your glands this is what starts occurring. The CBD quickly starts binding to receptors to ‘repair deficiencies’ with the goal of getting you back to a state of equilibrium.
This is no different than someone taking prescription medication for the ailments listed above. This medication is geared to try and help compensate for the deficiencies that are occurring in the body. The difference is CBD and other cannabinoids are natural and non-addictive.
